They *shouldn't* all exist. There should only be <select> and <select 
multiple>, stylable with XBL*. The only reason they do exist is for 
backwards compatibility.

No. password is a narrow subcase of text. It's like the difference 
between blue and #0000aa


* Actually, it should probably be <input type="select"> and <input 
type="multiselect">. But again, backwards comaptibility.
