<<This month's Piecework magazine has a beautiful article on
16th - 17th c. wedding knives and their sheaths. >>
Glad you liked it. I enjoyed researching and writing it (especially
examining those lovely sheaths.)
<< Where did you find the "caul and strings" reference? I'm
researching sweet bags, and would love to follow up on it. >>
"caul and strings" is fairly common, for knife sheaths - if you check
the articles referenced at the end of the article, you'll find it
there. I've never seen the term used with sweet bags.
Two other references not included are:
Eight centuries of European knives, forks and spoons - an art
collection (Stuttgart: Arnoldsche, 1997)
British cutlery: an illustrated history of design, evolution and use.
Peter Brown, editor. (London: Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd, 2001).
Keep in mind, both books (actually the other two as well) focus on
the cutlery, and knife sheaths are a very minor sidelight, no matter
how fascinating some of us may find them.
The latter two books are difficult if not impossible to find in the US -
Deborah
