Except the main advantage of inputgroup is not the grouping
functionality, but the fact it degrades to something other than a
single control. I understood this to be the primary motivator, not
the focus behaviour.

Yep, they have to process single field results, which are likely less
accurate than constrained results (the example for example had the 2nd
part of the group as a select element)

Other than they'd've had multiple controls in one of the proposed use
cases, so they'll have to learn not to use tab.
