Gecko used to do that 
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5764>, but no longer does 
because it didn't work for the many cases of <img src="spacer.gif"> and 
the like. (I can't find where the latter decision was made, but IIRC 
Ian Hickson was the one who made it.)
