You can't simply invent any DOCTYPE definition, while having it backwards
compatible.
Here's a tutorial about DTD, which also explains the DOCTYPE line:

Specifically:
<!DOCTYPE root-element [element-declarations]>
The root element in HTML5 is "html", not "html5".
