Do you see anyone suggesting such things? If not, please can we avid such
hyperbole.

We (not just one person) always need to be able to know the calendar
system in use; it's just that the default is Gregorian. Discussions of
preference for one kind of UI over another are premature.

Why make things /overly/ simple, if it prevents valid use cases from being
realised?
