My main concern with something like a class value or attribute is that 
it's much easier for authors to read, and thus depend on, which would 
constrain us in the future.

Your call, though. It's trivial to add to the spec an MAY statement 
allowing UAs to change the <html> or <body> class attribute, or whatnot.
