First, your message is not really about HTML5 so I'm not convinced this is
the most appropriate place to discuss it.
Second, your approach is interesting but not one I would use. Based on what
you've described, you've taken the appearance layer (CSS) of a page &
assigned that job to the behavior layer (JavaScript). To me that's like
using a screwdriver to put nails in a wall. While you might have some
success with it, it's just not the appropriate tool.
However, I do applaud you for developing a concept & executing it. Always
innovate!
