[html5] Forms: how to replace checkbox with active graphic?

Ben,

currently checkboxes show a tick and radio buttons an active centre.
however in a game GUI  this may spoil the illusion,
particularly where there is a single modality.
hence forms may appear as displays, and a highlight suggest active  
instead of a tick in a checkbox

I'm looking for one in a technical specification, or else the wild,
but one that specification conformant, ie accessibility etc...
