Escape is completely unused in my UA - of course you will rightly say
that most people aren't used to that as a modifier, I'm an emacs head
so am though, and feel that it would make a lot more sense than
overriding ALT yet again.

I don't believe ALT+SHIFT or CTRL+SHIFT are used on windows either.

They're not particularly good options any of them, but they're all
better than ALT!

I disagree, I would say this is a reason why users don't expect
ALT+anything to do anything but native GUI behaviour.
